One of the few annual articles I can’t wait for is 1up’s extensive and comprehensive list of over one hundred totally free PC games.  Looks like another fantastic list (I’m very intrigued by the long list of Shmup’s) this year, and I can attest to the greatest of Closure., Gang Garrison 2 and Gravity Bone.  Also, the phenomenal Half Life 2 mod Minerva is in their, and honestly, if you’re even a small fan of that series and you haven’t played Minerva, what are you doing wasting time here?  The game was so good, Valve hired the guy who made it!  Go play it right now!

Their is an Alpha out for the best named game of the year, AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! – A Reckless Disregard for Gravity, and it is really worth a play through.  I guess I really shouldn’t be surprised considering the name, but the game is really funny.  The Alpha lets you look at some items you can take on your sky diving jumps (Why you’d want to take them I’m not really sure) and the descriptions are ridiculous.  For example:

Popcorn Eyeglasses

The society of Avian Reserve Society sometimes gives these out to pilots who hit too many birds.  Why? Nobody will say.

We’re not even supposed to be talking to you.  We’re breaking the forth wall here.

Another plus is that the game is actually quite fun.  You might expect for an indie game where the developers really concentrate much on presentation and writing to have sub-par gimmicky gameplay, but the Sky Diving is really quite deep.  Their are multiple ways to fall through a level meaning different ways to get high scores.  Besides, how many games have a score totaling screen that just cuts to the chase and asks, “What’s your value as a human being?”.

The year is 1987.  Faucet has just come out with Gang Garrison 2, the sequel to 1985’s smash hit Gang Garrison.  Taking advantage of Macnet’s global intra-tube network, gamers can take part in the stylized, multiplayer action of Gang Garrison 2’s genre defining gameplay.  With 9 fully unique characters ranging from the Detonator, the Healer, ot the Overweight, Gang Garrison 2 is undeniably the new champion of Macnet gaming.  Just be sure and try it out before President Mondale’s new law bans violent video games.

In all seriousness, this nifty little “Demake” is really pretty entertaining.  The attention to detail is quite astounding, with rocket jumps, 2D remakes of Team Fortress 2 maps, and even similarly stylized giblets.  Hopefully this game gets some more attention so that finding an online game is easier.  I need a teleporter over here!

This Is Probably The Next Audiosurf: Raycatcher February 26, 2009

Guitar Hero and Rock Bands are all nice and fun, but what is everyone’s  standard complaint?  They don’t have that song!  The indie darling Audiosurf solved this problem by giving gamers the chance to use any of their MP3’s as tracks in the games psychedelic rhythm highways.  Now comes along a new challenger to the indie music game throne: Raycatcher.

You can try out a demo here, but the above video should tell you all you need to know.  It’s a music game, where you catch rays.  To your music.  I’m looking forward to the full release.
