Glacier Vomits Rusty Microbe Broth

No, I know what you’re thinking, but that is not blood from a whale that was accidentally dropped on a glacier in an attempt to move it from one aquarium to the next (That’s what you were think, right?).  That rusty colored brine actually comes from an ancient colony of microorganisms that had evolved to live without light deep inside the Arctic glacier.  Scientist theorize that the microbes may have evolved to live off of iron, which may be what gave them their very Mars-like color.  That just goes to show you the tenacity of life and how it can live anywhere, from the deepest oceans and to the vacuum of space.

I found this story at the excellent Knight Science Journalism Tracker Blog.
